School of the future - the learning and research center in Louisenlund

At Louisenlund, the architectural focus is on the transition from traditional classrooms to sensitively designed, transparent spaces and multifunctional areas. The values, traditions and future-oriented educational philosophy of the Louisenlund Foundation formed the basis for the planning of the BDA award-winning buildings and learning spaces on our educational campus. The design and function of the buildings promote active learning, interdisciplinary exchange and the intercultural competence of students and teachers.

Open learning spaces and flexible seminar rooms

Warm oak wood, temperate woolen fabrics, pleasant felt surfaces, soft upholstery and haptically appealing cabinet, table and chair surfaces offer a variety of materials and a comprehensible design language. In different learning situations, mobile tables, chairs and stands ensure maximum flexibility and combinability. Comfortable, upholstered retreat and reflection areas in front of the glazed gables complement the open learning landscapes. In addition to sufficient space for movement, sufficient daylight and good indoor air, good, differentiated room acoustics play a decisive role in the well-being of the pupils. In Louisenlund, this is immediately noticeable in the open learning areas for the Studio Times, each measuring around 300 square meters. The seminar rooms for in-depth input phases are also designed in such a way that they can be flexibly adapted to the learning content and the needs of learners and teachers. With digital whiteboards and walls that can be written on, they offer plenty of opportunities for securing results and developing creativity.

A new role for pedagogical teachers

Louisenlund pedagogy has fundamentally changed the role of teaching staff. The development from lecturer to learning facilitator or learning coach requires a working environment that optimally supports teachers in fulfilling this task. Recognizable to all students, teachers lead by example and demonstrate that learning is not just a formal process that takes place in educational institutions, but a continuous and lifelong process that is present in all aspects of life. The different dimensions of learning - cognitive, emotional, social, physical - that are important for individual personality development can be optimally combined at the Louisenlund boarding school with its teaching modules, open learning spaces, guild programs, residential communities and life in a diverse community.

Louisenlund is therefore also a special place for teachers, encouraging curiosity and openness to new experiences and insights. We open the school to impulses from research, politics, business and the arts. Teachers integrate new findings from subject science, subject didactics and educational science as well as general social developments into their work. They independently acquire topics and skills and develop research questions. This is the only way they can keep learning with pupils up to date in a holistic, independent and quality-oriented manner. In Louisenlund, we work together with the Institute for Quality Development in Schools (IQSH) in the area of further education and training for teachers from all over Schleswig-Holstein.

Flexible workspaces for teachers

Direct contact with pupils in seminars, accompanying their independent work in the open learning areas and in projects and guilds, working with colleagues to plan and prepare lessons and compile materials all require space and time. Undisturbed, concentrated work alone, but also informal communication with colleagues in a pleasant atmosphere - all this can only take place at school. To ensure that these complex processes of collaboration and interaction succeed, we have designed flexible work areas in the new buildings that can be easily adapted to different working styles and requirements.

Promoting collaboration, respecting individual needs - co-working space for teachers

School-provided personal tablets, video conferencing systems and wireless presentation capabilities on digital whiteboards enable seamless collaboration for both in-person and remote workers. Investments in sound-absorbing materials, acoustic partitions and targeted room design help to reduce noise and create a pleasant working environment for teachers. Plants, personal lockers, natural lighting and quiet areas promote mental well-being. In the new Learning and Research Center in particular, we have set up spacious areas for agile collaboration, concentrated work or informal meetings for a total of 60 teaching staff. This allows us to create a balanced environment that both promotes collaboration and respects individual needs. Flexibility, comfort, technological support and an inspiring environment create the conditions for concentrated learning support for students.

Historically grown, visionary thinking - integration on the educational campus

The central architectural motif of the four building sections of the learning and research center for learning, research and joint discovery are the glazed gable walls on the north and south sides. They provide light-flooded interior spaces and create a visual connection to the historic landscaped garden and the historic buildings surrounding Louisenlund Castle.

The restrained and color-coordinated wall cladding also visually integrates the learning and research center into the overall building complex on the educational campus. All learning, work and laboratory areas are highly adaptable and can adapt to changing educational concepts and future technological developments. A successful combination of tradition and modernity.
