For 75 years, the Louisenlund Foundation has specialized in sensitively supporting precisely this transition between primary school and secondary school. We have further developed the pioneering pedagogical approaches of Maria Montessori and our founding father, the experiential educator Kurt Hahn, and supplemented them with modern findings from educational research. The junior level as part of the Louisenlund community

In this homely environment, children can discover their goals, values and place in the world. Structured daily routine with learning and leisure phases

Der Schultag in der Juniorenstufe beginnt um 08:00 Uhr und endet gegen 16:00 Uhr – je nach individuellem Stundenplan. Getrennt durch drei Mahlzeiten, teilt sich der Tag für die Lernenden in schulische und außerunterrichtliche Phasen auf. 

The focus is on the learning phases in the morning and activities in guilds and sports in the afternoon.

The consistent planning of double lesson blocks ensures continuity in the learning process. Pupils thus have more time to engage with the school topics and learn more intensively.

During the school day, pupils are closely supported by qualified teachers and mentors. They provide support during the educational learning phases and are always on hand with empathy and advice.

The academic concept

Competence, independence, individuality - the Louisenlund pedagogy

At Louisenlund, we do everything we can to create the optimal framework for young people to learn and live. Our vision is to offer pupils a daily environment in which they learn to understand more complex relationships, think innovatively and act in a media-savvy manner. We place particular emphasis on individual learning at their own pace.

Inter-year learning

The junior level is not divided into fixed classrooms and year groups. We learn across year groups in specially equipped and furnished learning areas. Flexible and high-quality furniture enables optimal use of the learning barn. In order to give pupils structure in their everyday school life, we have abandoned a fragmented timetable in favor of clear, pupil-oriented teaching formats:

 

The learning time

Learning time" takes place in the learning landscapes. Each child has their own workstation for individual work. Flexible seating is available for input and practice phases in the group. The entire building can be used for partner and group work. The academic focus during learning time is on mathematics and German. The mentors accompany and support the children individually. Integrated into the learning time are input and

phases, which all mentors plan in close consultation with each other. This allows the input phases to be tailored to the children's needs.

The project lesson

In the social sciences, artistic and aesthetic subjects and natural sciences, we focus on practical learning in projects. Project lessons enable concentrated and in-depth exploration of the various topics. When choosing projects, students can set individual priorities according to their personal interests and learn in depth according to their inclinations.

As the project lessons also take place in mixed-grade project groups, they not only enable learning according to individual strengths, but also avoid over- and underchallenging students by allowing them to support and interact with each other. Compulsory areas, which every learner completes, ensure that the subject requirements are fulfilled, although learners can also set priorities here according to their individual interests within the scope of possibilities.

Foreign languages in year groups

The third teaching format is dedicated to foreign languages. Learning a foreign language has a motivating effect on the pupils, strengthens their understanding of their mother tongue and is perceived as a success by the learners. At Louisenlund, English is compulsory for all pupils from Year 5 onwards.

In an increasingly globally networked world, the acquisition of English is an important prerequisite for the future. In Year 7, pupils choose a second foreign language. They can choose between French, Spanish and Latin. As the foreign languages are new to most of the children, they are taught in year groups.

Preparation for middle and upper school

Personalisiertes Lernen in Louisenlund macht Spaß und gibt den Schülern die Möglichkeit, ihr eigenes Lerntempo zu entdecken. Dabei geht es nicht nur um akademische Inhalte, sondern auch um die Vorbereitung auf die weitere Schullaufbahn.

We pay careful attention to the integration of digital presentation and documentation techniques and carefully introduce structural topics such as self-management and digitalization. With regular presentations of the results, we not only check the learning success, but also provide confidence in dealing with more complex topics and promote the self-confidence of the young students. The wide range of individualization options and choices are perceived as motivating by the pupils. In this way, we give pupils the tools for a successful future right from the junior level.

Sport, music and culture

Project-oriented learning in artistic and aesthetic subjects and in sport

Die Kernfächer Deutsch, Mathematik und Sprachen sind essenziell. In den musisch-ästhetischen Fächern und im Sport legen wir besonderen Wert auf projektorientiertes Erlebnislernen. 

In addition to performing arts, this also includes music, art and sport. Scientific studies have shown that artistic, musical and sporting activities can promote personal development in a variety of ways:

  • Learning to play an instrument not only sharpens memory and attention, but also spatial awareness.
  • Deciphering notes, memorizing melodies and understanding musical patterns stimulates the brain and promotes cognitive development.
  • Playing instruments and singing refines the coordination of hands and mouth.
  • Putting oneself in another person's shoes when performing opens the horizon to other perspectives and views, promotes tolerance and increases empathy.
  • Making music in an orchestra is about teamwork, active listening, mutual trust and harmonious interaction.
  • Social skills are strengthened and a sense of community is nurtured.

Art offers many opportunities to articulate and process emotions and improves emotional well-being. Mastering an instrument, improving at sport or learning lines for a play requires commitment, discipline, patience and perseverance.

Where sport shapes character

In der naturnahen Atmosphäre von Louisenlund folgen geistige Anstrengung und körperliche Aktivität aufeinander. Nachdem die Köpfe über kniffligen Mathematikaufgaben gebrütet haben, bietet der Sport sich als ideales Ventil an, um Energie freizusetzen und das Gemeinschaftsgefühl zu stärken. 

Based on the principles of Maria Montessori and Kurt Hahn, we firmly believe that movement and experiential education not only contribute to character development, but also promote key skills for the 21st century. Louisenlund offers a variety of different sports in its attractive guild program at the junior level.

Neben Fußball, Volleyball, Tennis und Hockey ist Segeln ein besonderes Highlight und ein fester Bestandteil unseres Bildungsprogramms. Der Campus, malerisch am Ufer der Schlei gelegen, verfügt über einen eigenen, sicheren Hafen. 

Under the watchful guidance of experienced sailing instructors, students discover the magic of wind energy and the art of sailing. They not only learn how to navigate the boat, but also develop a deep understanding of weather and water conditions. Depending on their individual abilities, sailors can choose between different boat classes. Sailing in Louisenlund is much more than just a sport. It can be seen as a relaxed leisure activity, an open-air science laboratory or a competitive sport.

Guilds are interdisciplinary learning communities that enable your child to explore their diverse interests intensively and develop new skills and competencies in the process.

They stand for self-determination and self-discovery and make it possible to individually shape one's own learning path. Within the guilds, we encourage students to take on challenges, expand their personal boundaries and deepen their social and emotional skills. In doing so, they experience positive emotions first-hand, increase their commitment and forge friendships that extend beyond their own year group. Our pupils learn that skills and competencies can be developed through effort and perseverance. In this context, a setback is not seen as a setback, but as a valuable opportunity to learn. We continuously adapt our guild offerings to the students' wishes and educational goals. Popular guilds are, for example: Sailing, Theater, Tennis, Tea Room or Robotics.

The path to the Louisenlund junior level

The application process begins a little earlier than at state schools and ends on January 31 for the following school year. The application process for the Louisenlund Junior School includes the following steps:

Information days grammar school year 5

On information days, the head of the junior school provides information about what the grammar school has to offer and how to register for year 5. After a tour of the school grounds with a visit to the learning spaces and dining hall, there is a presentation of the educational concept followed by a discussion.

Cost structure and financing options

Enable your child to attend school in Louisenlund

As a private school and charitable foundation, the Louisenlund Foundation's budget is primarily financed by parental contributions. The parental contribution is set by the Board of Directors as an annual rate for a school year. The costs for our all-day school program can be found in our cost sheet.

Regional scholarships for day pupils from year 5 onwards

Die Stiftung Louisenlund ist in der Region fest verankert und Teil der Bildungslandschaft in Schleswig-Holstein. Seit 2014 werden Stipendien für Schüler aus der Region zur Aufnahme in den 5. Jahrgang vergeben.

The scholarships are partial scholarships and are valid for the child's entire time at school.

To receive a partial scholarship for the coming school year, a written application is required by January 31.
